Nur — Privacy policy

In short

Nur works without an account. Prayer times, the Qibla, your reading log and your reminders are worked out and kept on your phone.

If you sign in, the things you choose to keep in your account are stored on Nur's own server so they follow you to another phone. We do not sell data, show ads or track you across apps and websites.

What stays on your phone

Your location for prayer times and the Qibla, your reading log and statistics, the daily reading target, surah and khataman reminders, the page colour and player settings, offline recitation audio, and your zakat figures.

Your voice, when you record yourself to compare with the reciter (talaqqi, and recording yourself in memorisation pauses) or to have a murajaah recitation checked: the microphone is used only then, the recording stays on your phone and is deleted when you close it or the next one replaces it. It is never uploaded (the one exception is a teacher's voice note in Classes, below). The check is made on the phone itself, by a recitation model Nur downloads once from its own server (Quran-Lab's, free and open), or by Apple's speech recognition when that model can't be downloaded. Reading along in the reader, checking your recitation while memorising, and "Which ayah is this?" (recognising a recitation heard nearby) listen the same way, on the phone, and record nothing.

What we keep when you sign in

Your account: the name and e-mail address Apple or Google share when you sign in, and an account identifier.

What you sync: prayer and fasting logs, bookmarks, tasbih counts, own dhikr and goals, the khatam plan, hafalan progress and reviews, highlights and notes on ayahs, progress in the vocabulary, tajweed lessons and reading course (not the name you write on its certificate, which stays on your phone), the pages and notebooks you write in Write the Quran (your handwriting), where you stopped listening, and your app settings. Excused days (haid / nifas) stay on your phone unless you turn on Sync excused days.

Khataman bersama: groups you create or join — the group's name, the name you show in it, which juz you hold and when they were read. Other members of the group see these. Guests an organiser adds are kept by name only.

Classes (for TPA / TPQ): classes a teacher makes or a student joins — the class's name, the names shown in it, and what teachers record: each session (day, step, Lancar or Ulang, a note), tasks and private notes. A student who joins shares their reading-course progress with the class's teachers, and the scores of the tasks they do (each day's best score, and which ayahs or letters it covered) — a recitation checked for a task is checked on the phone and the recording stays there; only the score is sent. The student sees their own entries, tasks and scores, never classmates'. With a five daily prayers task, the student's teachers also see which of the five prayers the student ticked each day (prayed, late or not) — never parents or classmates. With a Write the Quran task, the page the student wrote goes to the class's teachers, who can stamp it and record a voice note of up to a minute for that student; the voice note is kept with the class and only that student can play it. Children without the app are kept by the name a teacher enters. Leaving the class, or deleting your account, removes your place in it and its entries.

Mosque suggestions you send: the details you enter and the location you mark (and where you were when you sent it), so the team can check them.

For notifications: your device's push token, the app's language and your country, to deliver announcements. Reminders for prayer, khatam, murajaah and the rest are scheduled on your phone.

Location

Prayer times and the Qibla are calculated on your phone. To find mosques near you, your coordinates are sent to Apple Maps and to Nur's server to look up nearby verified mosques; they are not stored.

Services we rely on

Apple (Sign in with Apple, Maps, notifications), Google (Google Sign-In), Nur's own server (accounts and synced data), islamic.network (recitation audio) and a public currency feed (gold and silver prices). As with any internet request, these services see your IP address.

Deleting your data

Settings → Account → Delete account removes your account and the data stored with it on the server. Leaving a khataman group removes you from it. Data kept on your phone is removed when you delete the app.

Children

Nur is a general-audience app and does not knowingly collect information from children beyond what a parent or guardian chooses to sync, and what a child's TPA / TPQ teacher keeps in a class (their name and lesson notes, see above).

Changes

If this policy changes, the date above changes with it, and significant changes are announced in the app.
